EJ&T - 1 Timothy: Commandments for women, widows, and slaves

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

Don't believe fables.

Neither give heed to fables. 1 Timothy 1:4

Refuse profane and old wives' fables. 1 Timothy 4:7

Don't believe in endless genealogies.

Neither give heed to ... endless genealogies 1 Timothy 1:4

Avoid ... genealogies. Titus 3:9

Pray for everybody.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions ... be made for all men 1 Timothy 2:1

Men should pray everywhere.

I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 1 Timothy 2:8-9

Women should dress modestly.

I will therefore ... that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety. 1 Timothy 2:8-9

Women should not braid their hair.

I will therefore ... that women adorn themselves ... not with braided hair. 1 Timothy 2:8-9

Wives ... whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair. 1 Peter 3:1-3

Women should not wear expensive jewelry.

I will therefore ... that women adorn themselves ... not with ... gold, or pearls, or costly array. 1 Timothy 2:8

Wives ... whose adorning let it not be ... of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel. 1 Peter 3:1-3

Women should do good works.

But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 1 Timothy 2:10

Women should be silent.

Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 1 Timothy 2:11

I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 1 Timothy 2:12

Women should not teach.

I suffer not a woman to teach. 1 Timothy 2:12

Women should never have authority over men.

I suffer not a woman ... to usurp authority over the man. 1 Timothy 2:12

Bishops and deacons must perfect and have only one wife.

(Their wives must be perfect, too.)

A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; ... Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 1 Timothy 3:2-7

Exercise to become godly.

(Don't bother with bodily exercise, though.)

Exercise thyself rather unto godliness. For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.1 Timothy 4:7-8

Honor widows that are widows indeed.

A widow indeed has no children or nephews; is desolate, trusts in God, and prays all the time; is not living in pleasure (a widow living in pleasure is the living dead); is over 60 years old; had only one husband; has raised children; has lodged strangers; has washed the saints' feet; has relieved the afflicted; and has diligently followed every good work.

Honour widows that are widows indeed. But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God. Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man. Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work. 1 Timothy 5:3-10

Refuse young widows.

(They will wax wanton against Christ and marry. They are all damned because they've cast off their first faith. They are idle tattlers and busybodies. Many have turned aside after Satan. They should all just get married and have children.)

The younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1 Timothy 5:11-15

If you have any widows, take care of them yourself. The church will only deal with widows indeed.

If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed. 1 Timothy 5:16

Give elders that rule well double honor.

(And maybe a double paycheck.)

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. 1 Timothy 5:17-18

An elder can't be accused of any wrongdoing unless there are two or three witnesses.

Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses. 1 Timothy 5:19

Publicly rebuke sinners.

(So everyone else will fear.)

Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. 1 Timothy 5:20

Obey all of the commandments in this epistle.

(Without preferring one more than the others.)

These things command and teach. 1 Timothy 4:11

I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. 1 Timothy 5:21

These things teach and exhort. 1 Timothy 6:2

Keep this commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Timothy 6:14

Don't lay your hands suddenly on anyone.

Lay hands suddenly on no man. 1 Timothy 5:22

Don't partake of other people's sins.

Neither be partaker of other men's sins. 1 Timothy 5:22

Keep yourself pure.

Keep thyself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22

Don't drink water anymore. Dink wine instead.

(For your stomach's sake.)

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities. 1 Timothy 5:23

Slaves, honor your masters.

Let as many servants [slaves] as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 1 Timothy 6:1

If your master is a believer, serve him.

(Since he is a faithful and beloved partaker of the benefit.)

They that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. 1 Timothy 6:2

Shun those who teach anything that disagrees with the commandments in this epistle.

(They are all proud, evil, know-nothings.)

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. 1 Timothy 6:3-5

If you have food and clothes, be content.

Having food and raiment let us be therewith content. 1 Timothy 6:8

Avoid wealth.

They that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things. 1 Timothy 6:9-11

Try to be godly.

Follow after ... godliness. 1 Timothy 6:11

Fight the good fight of faith.

Fight the good fight of faith. 1 Timothy 6:12

Hold on to eternal life.

Lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12

Tell the rich not to put their trust in their riches.

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 1 Timothy 6:17

Rich people should do good by distributing their wealth among others.

That they [the rich] do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute. 1 Timothy 6:18

Avoid profane and vain babblings.

Avoiding profane and vain babblings. 1 Timothy 6:20

Shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. 2 Timothy 2:16

Avoid the opposition of science (falsely so called).

Avoiding ... oppositions of science falsely so called. 1 Timothy 6:20
