EJ&T - James: The prayer of faith shall save the sick

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. If you lack wisdom, ask God to give it to you.
  2. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. James 1:5

  3. Don't say you were tempted by God.
  4. (God doesn't tempt anyone.)
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. James 1:13

  5. Don't make a mistake.
  6. Do not err, my beloved brethren. James 1:16

  7. Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
  8. Be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath. James 1:19

  9. Don't be filthy and naughty.
  10. Lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness. James 1:21

  11. Receive with meekness the planted word.
  12. Receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. James 1:21

  13. Do the word; don't just hear it.
  14. be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. James 1:22

  15. Bridle you tongue.
  16. (Or your religion is in vain.)
If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain. James 1:26

For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile. 1 Peter 3:10

  17. Visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.
  18. Visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction. James 1:27

  19. Keep yourself unspotted from the world.
  20. Keep himself unspotted from the world. James 1:27

  21. Don't treat the rich better than the poor.
  22. My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons. For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment; And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool: Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him? But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats? James 2:1-6

  23. Submit to God.
  24. Submit yourselves therefore to God. James 4:7

  25. Resist the devil.
  26. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7

  27. Get close to God.
  28. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. James 4:8

  29. Be afflicted.
  30. Be afflicted. James 4:9

  31. If you are rich, weep and howl.
  32. Ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. James 5:1

  33. Be patient. Jesus is coming soon.
  34. Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord ... for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. James 5:8

  35. Grudge not.
  36. Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned James 5:9

  37. If you are afflicted, pray.
  38. Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. James 5:13

  39. If you are merry, sing psalms.
  40. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. James 5:13

  41. If you are sick, ask the elders to pray for you.
  42. (The prayer of faith shall save the sick.)
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. James 5:14-15

  43. Confess your faults to one another.
  44. Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. James 5:15

  45. Convert anyone who believes incorrectly.
  46. if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him. James 5:19

Job certainly would disagree with that one.

"And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham." (GEN 22:1)
