Congratulations, It's a boy! Episode 2: The line of Cain

As you'll recall, the first thing Adam and Eve did after leaving the Garden of Eden was -- well, obey God's command to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.

And they got off to a great start, too. They had two babies in the first two verses, both boys, named Cain and Abel. But then Cain killed Abel, and the world's population fell to 3.

It took the first couple a while to get back into the business of being fruitful, but eventually Adam knew Eve again. And when Adam was 130 years old they had another baby boy named Seth.

But this episode isn't about them. It's about Cain.

So what happened to Cain after he killed his brother Abel?

Well, God cursed him to be a fugitive and vagabond and put a mark on him so no one would kill him (I guess God thought Cain's parents might kill him since they were the only other people alive at the time).
The LORD said unto Cain ... now art thou cursed ... a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be. Genesis 4:9-12

And Cain said ... every one that findeth me shall slay me. 4:13-14

And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. 4:15
Then Cain went to the land of Nod on the east of Eden, got married (to an unnamed sister?), and founded a city (population 3), naming the city after his son, Enoch.
Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 4:16
And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. 4:17
In the next verse, there's a population explosion in the city of Enoch in the land of Nod.
And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech. 4:18
Four baby boys in a single verse! (No mention of wives or daughters. And every father had a single son. I guess the land of Nod had a one-son policy at the time.)

But Lamech broke the one (nameless) wife / one son rule. He had two wives (Adah and Zillah), and the three of them worked together to produce three sons and one daughter. (The daughter--Naamah--was the first daughter born in the Bible and the first named female, after Eve.)
Lamech took unto him two wives: the name of the one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 4:19
And Adah bare Jabal ... And his brother's name was Jubal. 4:20-21
And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain ... and the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah. 4:22
And that's all the Bible has to say about Cain and his descendants in the land of Nod. They were all destroyed in the flood.

OK, so it's time to count boys and girl babies.

There were five generations after Cain, each with one baby boy. (5)
Then there's Lamech's three sons and one daughter.

So the total for this episode is: 8 boys, 1 girl.
Cumulative total: 11 boys, 1 girl.

Next we get to count boys and girls in the Sethite line.

It might be interesting to have a graph with the running total for boys and girls in book/chapter order.
