Jacob 3: Repent or "their skins will be whiter than yours."

Remember how God cursed the Lamanites (Native Americans) by darkening their skin? Well, he'll do it to you too, if you don't repent. That is the lesson of Jacob 3.

Back 2 Nephi 5, in God cursed the Lamanites, causing "a skin of blackness to come upon them" to make them appear repulsive to the "white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome" Nephites.

And it worked, too. The Nephites hated the Lamanites "because of their filthiness" and dark skins. But God says that the filthy Lamanites are more righteous than the Nephites, because they haven't committed whoredoms by having more than one wife like the Nephites (and  Joseph SmithBrigham Young, and Mitt Romney's great grandfather).
The Lamanites ... whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins, are more righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father -- that they should have save it were one wife, and concubines they should have none, and there should not be whoredoms committed among them. Jacob 3:5
God warns the Nephites that unless they repent, he will make their skin even darker than that of the Lamanites.
Unless ye shall repent of your sins that their skins will be whiter than yours. Jacob 3:8
After delivering God's dark-skin warning, Jacob spoke about many more things, only 1 percent of which he included in his small plates. But you can read all about them in the larger plates.
I, Jacob, spake many more things ... And a hundredth part of the proceedings of this people, which now began to be numerous, cannot be written upon these plates; but many of their proceedings are written upon the larger plates. Jacob 12-13
Jacob's small plates are called the plates of Jacob, which were somehow made by the hand of Nephi after Nephi died.
These plates are called the plates of Jacob, and they were made by the hand of Nephi. Jacob 3:14
And that's all Jacob has to say about that.
And I make an end of speaking these words. Jacob 3:14b

Mr. Deity & The Signs (Part Deux)

I'd say something about it, but I don't want to spoil it.
Just watch.

What if we could edit the Bible? (Opening Karl Giberson's can of worms)

Is there a Bible-believer who hasn't asked that question?

Yes, I'm sure there are many, perhaps even most. Because most people who believe in the Bible have never read it (all of it, that is, not just carefully selected bits and pieces).

But what about believers who have read it? Have they asked themselves that question?

I suspect that most have, since they believe that Bible is the pure word of God, and yet when they read it (the whole damned thing), they find that it's about as pure and inspired as the rantings of their drunk uncle at last year's Christmas party.

Take Karl Giberson, for example. He is a Sophisticated Theologian (a term "Coyned" by Jerry Coyne) who is ashamed and disgusted by the Bible, while he pretends to believe it is the inspired word of God.

Here are a few quotes from his recent HuffPo article, "If only we could edit the Bible."
I have often wondered--quietly and usually to myself--what would happen if we could edit the Bible.  Wouldn't it be good if some ecumenical committee could go through the Old Testament and take out all the language about stoning people to death for breaking various rules? Or maybe soften that passage where the Psalmist talks about bashing the heads of the babies of his enemies against the rocks? We could also fix some of those New Testament misquotes of the Old Testament.
Suggesting this is heretical, of course, but it seems to me that it would be better, in some ways at least, to edit the Bible than to ignore it....
He doesn't, of course, follow through with his suggestion. He leaves all the nasty stuff in the Bible alone and continues to ignore it (while pretending to believe it). That's sophisticated theology for you.

So I thought I'd give it a go and help believers relieve themselves of the embarrassing parts of the Bible.

Here is a short list of verses from the Old and New Testaments that every believer would like to get rid of, but can't. (These verses are listed on the endpapers of the SAB book, which will be available in November.)

Old Testament verses that Karl Giberson should edit

New Testament verses that (as Romney would say) could be stated more elegantly

Did God curse Mitt Romney by darkening his skin?

It's a fair question. Really.

You see, some people have noticed that Mitt's skin looked noticeably darker when he was interviewed by Univision yesterday.

So the question is this: Did Romney use make-up to darken his skin in order to appear more Latino to the Univision viewers? Or was there something else going on? Something that went on all the time in Romney's second favorite book, the Book of Mormon.

That book makes it clear that the Mormon God prefers white skin and punishes people by darkening their skin.
And he [God] had caused the cursing to come upon them [the Lamanites] ... wherefore, as they were white, and exceedingly fair and delightsome, that they might not be enticing unto my people the Lord God did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them. 2 Nephi 5:21
The Lamanites ... were led by their evil nature that they became wild, and ferocious, and a bloodthirsty people, full of idolatry and filthiness; feeding upon beasts of prey; dwelling in tents, and wandering about in the wilderness with a short skin girdle about their loins and their heads shaven.... And many of them did eat nothing save it was raw meat; and they were continually seeking to destroy us" Enos 1:20
He did it to the Lamanites (Native Americans) and he did it to black people (the descendants of Cain). Maybe he did it to Romney.

Here is how Governor Romney looked four years ago when he ran for president.

And here's how he looked in the Univision interview.

Mexican Mitt

I'd say he doesn't look nearly so "fair and delightsome" now, with that "skin of blackness" all over him. I wonder if he's also become  "wild, and ferocious, ... bloodthirsty ... full of idolatry and filthiness; feeding upon beasts of prey" and  "wandering about in the wilderness with a short skin girdle" upon his loins.

It's hard to say. But it's a fair question.

I guess we'll have to see how he acts on the campaign trail and at the debates.  I can hardly wait.

No one was murdered (or blinded) because of this image

In my last post, I displayed the recent Muhammad cartoons that are causing such an uproar in the Muslim world. I hope no one was blinded by looking at them.

Here is a similar (but nsfw) cartoon that was featured in recent Onion article, with the caption, "No one was murdered because of this image."

Here is the text of the article:
WASHINGTON—Following the publication of the image above, in which the most cherished figures from multiple religious faiths were depicted engaging in a lascivious sex act of considerable depravity, no one was murdered, beaten, or had their lives threatened, sources reported Thursday. The image of the Hebrew prophet Moses high-fiving Jesus Christ as both are having their erect penises vigorously masturbated by Ganesha, all while the Hindu deity anally penetrates Buddha with his fist, reportedly went online at 6:45 p.m. EDT, after which not a single bomb threat was made against the organization responsible, nor did the person who created the cartoon go home fearing for his life in any way. Though some members of the Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist faiths were reportedly offended by the image, sources confirmed that upon seeing it, they simply shook their heads, rolled their eyes, and continued on with their day.
And no one was murdered or blinded, at least as far as I know.

Which makes me wonder, what is wrong with non-Muslim believers these days?

I'm thinking especially about the Christians and Jews here. Haven't they read Leviticus 24:16?
He that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him.
That is about as clear as it gets in the Bible -- Blasphemers are to be stoned to death. (There is no Leviticus 24:16 analog in the Quran.)

So why aren't Christians and Jews calling for the deaths of the Onion blasphemers?

And why are only Muslims willing to follow God's clear command in Leviticus 24:16?
