EJ&T - Deuteronomy 6: Love God; swear by his name; talk about his laws; memorize them; write them on your hand, forehead, door posts, gates, etc.

In the Every Jot and Tittle project, I am listing all of the Bible's commandments from Genesis to Revelation, in accordance with Jesus's words in Matthew 5:18-19. I have no idea how many commandments I'll find, but Jewish tradition claims there are 613. See here for a list of those that I've found so far.

  1. Love God.

    2. Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Deuteronomy 6:5

    Love him [God]. Deuteronomy 10:12

    Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. Matthew 22:36-38

  2. Know all of God's laws by heart.

    3. These words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart. Deuteronomy 6:6

  3. Teach God's laws to your children.

    4. Thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children. Deuteronomy 6:7a

    Ye shall teach them [God's laws] [to] your children. Deuteronomy 1:18

  4. Talk about God's laws when you're sitting in your house, when you're walking, when you lie down, and when you get up.

    5. Talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:7

    Speaking of them [God's laws] when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 11:19

    This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth. Joshua 1:8

  5. Write God's laws on your hand and forehead.

    6. Thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. Deuteronomy 6:8

    Bind them [God's laws] for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. Deuteronomy 11:18

  6. Write God's laws on your door posts and gates.

    7. And it shall be for a token upon thine hand, and for frontlets between thine eyes: for by strength of hand the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt. Exodus 13:16

    Thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:9

    Thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates. Deuteronomy 11:20

  7. Swear by God's name.

    8. Thou ... shalt swear by his name. Deuteronomy 6:13

    Swear by his name. Deuteronomy 10:20

  8. Don't tempt God.

    9. Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God. Deuteronomy 6:16

    Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Matthew 4:7

  9. Do good.

    10. Thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD. Deuteronomy 6:18

    Do good. Psalm 34:14, 37:3, 37:27, 1 Peter 3:11

    Learn to do well. Isaiah 1:17

    Make your ways and your doings good. Jeremiah 18:11

    Cleave to that which is good. Romans 12:9

    Ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. 1 Thessalonians 5:15

    Stablish you in every good word and work. 2 Thessalonians 2:17

    Be not weary in well doing. 2 Thessalonians 3:13

    Be ready to every good work. Titus 3:1

    Learn to maintain good works. Titus 3:14

    To him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17
